Working in Addis Ababa

This project focuses on working in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, mainly impressions of the working centre and main market "Merkato", where you can find everything you need. The whole market is divided up into special areas, where only one thing is produced: e.g. the food area, a metal processing area or a huge recycling area.
Another normal job in Addis Ababa is that of the shoe cleaners. Most of them are children or young men, mainly coming from south to Addis. Around five of the young shoe cleaners are working at the same spot during the day and afterwards they share a small room, where day live together like a family, far away from their parents. Daily income for them is around 2-3 €, while one shoe cleaning is about 4-10 EuroCents (1-3 Birr).
The recycling area within "Merkato", where a huge amount of empty bottles are collected and sold.
Right in the middle of "Merkato", between all trash, noise and dust, three children are playing on their football table.
Market for traditional Ethiopian coffee pots.
Evidence for Ethiopian creativity: gym maschines and dumbbells made of old car and engine parts.
Not only a stick: it's the Ethiopian tooth brush! On this wood stick, sold for a few cents, they chew hours and hours per day.
Ethiopia, land of the coffee, and its coffee houses. This one, "Tomoca", is one of the oldest and most famous ones you can find in Addis.
Busy "Piassa" place with the main transport vehicle: the blue-white coloured minibus.
Broom-making spot on "Merkato".
Metal-processing area.
